Sustainability Means Reliability as R-kioski Goes Wood-based

A very select few brands in Finland can claim to be the best at something but R-kioski in its own right is one of them. 

Simply known as “R” or as the Finns pronounce it “ärrä”, Finland’s largest and most-known convenience store chain has set up shop in approximately 450 different places nationwide. Some might even describe the brand as a staple in Finnish society since the first store opened in 1910.

And just like any other thriving business with a centennial history, R-kioski values its customers the most. Alongside the convenient services, the option of sustainable and responsible choices has also come into play. 

And Woodly’s heat-sealed bag is one of them. 

“We used to bag our bread products in windowed paper bags at kiosks, and the window in the bag was ordinary packaging plastic, so Woodly’s solution is more responsible. The bag also shows the Woodly logo that informs about the responsible choice, and the customer does not confuse the packaging with traditional plastic packaging,” says Pasi Malmelin, the Deli Manager at R-kioski.

Presentation is everything

Made from carbon-neutral, wood-based and recyclable Woodly® material, The Woodly® bag is designed to upkeep product freshness and reduce food waste among other benefits such as durability and usability. 

But one apparent quality clearly stands out from the rest, according to the Deli Manager and the shopkeepers.

“Woodly’s transparent bag shows the products better and we think it’s a very good thing that the product is clearly visible from the Woodly® bag for the customers to see and still, the solution is more responsible than the previous bag.”

Supporting sustainability

Sustainable decisions have gained a more prominent role in the everyday lives of consumers because there are more environmentally friendly products available.

With the help of labelling and communication, R-kioski’s customers are also being informed about the support they are showing to sustainability.

“The Woodly® bag is an easy way for customers to feel the wood-based material and understand our consistent goals towards more responsible operations,” adds Malmelin.

“Of course, the use of a new material that is in its very early stages in consumer packaging is always a bit exciting, but R-kioski wants to help the consumer make more responsible decisions when choosing packaging materials, responsibility is tangible for the consumer and not just an image,” concludes Malmelin.
